Vermont Web Works - Frequently Asked Questions

Many of our clients are beginners to web site ownership, and most would rather spend their time concentrating on their day to day operations and leave the web site to us. With that in mind, we offer free consultation to our customers at the outset, and welcome any questions that may come up from time to time. If you don't see your question posted here, feel free to drop an Email to me.

Do I Need A Web site?

Only you can answer that question. However, if you offer a product, service or information, your web site can be your personal introduction to your potential clients. A web site allows you to showcase your products and services and provides your customers your company information at their leisure, and a web site provides a simple way for customers to contact you.

How Much Does It Cost?

It depends. Our base rate for commercial small businesses is $25.00 an hour. A small basic site with 3 to 5 pages where you provide all the graphics, copy, photography and other necessary materials can often be built in 20 hours or less. That includes assistance with domain name registration and hosting services. We also provide graphic design services, copy writing, logo creation services and photography. The more services you need from us, the higher the cost.

What's all this stuff about "Standards"?

The W3C has developed standards for all web authors and browser manufacturers in order to bring uniformity to the internet worldwide. Adhering to these standards guarantees that your web site will not only work well across all browsers from Internet Explorer to Firefox, but that your site will work just as well in the future as it does the day it is posted.

What's "Search Engine Optimization"?

Search Engine Optimization" or "SEO" simply means paying attention to the construction and content of your web site to make it easier for the major search engines (Google, Yahoo, Ask etc.) to find you. While some large companies charge big money for SEO services, we take the search engines into consideration from the start to make your site easier for your client's to find.

What's "CSS" and why is it important?

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a simple mechanism for adding style (e.g. fonts, colors, spacing) to Web documents and has become the web design standard. All new web sites, and older sites in need of updating, should be always be created using CSS. At VermontWebWorks.net, all of our sites are written with CSS and XHTML.

What's "Cross Browser Compatibility" and why should I be concerned with it?

Even with strict adherence to standards, different web browsers and different computers display web pages differently. To make sure your web site works correctly across the major browsers, we check each page we create on a variety of the top ones. Including IE7, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, and Opera.

How Long Does It Take To Design & Build A Web Site?

That's determined by the size of the site, the complexity, and our current design schedule. It's entirely possible to have a simple quality web site built, tested, approved, uploaded and "live" in a month or less.
